NYCC Waste Conference 2009

NYCC held a Waste Conference in November 2009 at the Harrogate Convention Centre to congratulate themselves on progress in waste management and recycling over the last 7 years. This is despite the fact that they had the Minerals and Waste Core Strategy thrown out by the Planning Inspectorate in 2008, their flagship incineration pilot plant is in a voluntary arrangement with its creditors and the joint venture Yorwaste is in serious trouble requiring a write off of £1million in debts.

DISC members were in attendance to question progress to date and were told an announcement would be forthcoming of the new contractor in Jan/Feb 2010. This contract is the single largest and most important decision the County officers have ever had to make and will involve nearly £1 billion of expenditure over the next 25 years.

The presentation made by NYCC used a map to illustrate the concentration of landfill in the county (see below) and underlines the reasons for a preference to site the incinerator at Allerton Park due to the proximity to current traffic flows:-
